Easy Step-by-Step Carpet Measuring
Sketch Your Rooms
Grab a notepad and draw a quick, simple blueprint of the rooms you want to carpet. You don't have to worry about being an artist, but make sure to include any bump-outs, closets, alcoves, and doorways in the spaces.
Measure Length and Width
Run your tape measure across the longest and widest points of the room. Always measure into the center of doorways and all the way to the back of closets. Write these numbers down on your sketch.
Calculate Basic Square Footage
Multiply the length by the width of each room to get the baseline square footage for new carpet.
For example, a 12 ft x 15 ft room requires 180 square feet of carpet.

Add A Safety Buffer
Add 10% to 15% of extra to your total square feet of carpet for waste, trimming, and seam alignment. If your room has a lot of unique angles or an unusual shape, lean closer to 15%.
*If your carpet features a pattern with a larger design, lining up carpet pattern seams properly can require up to 30% more additional material for a visually aligned installation.

Unlike hardwood or vinyl plank, wall-to-wall carpet usually comes in standard roll widths of 12 feet or 15 feet. If your room is 13 feet wide, a 12-foot roll won't cover it without a seam.
